PAINTING WITH LIGHTTM AT COLOR SPACE FINISHING

Color grading has evolved over the years into what has become more of an art form than a technical solution. As digital technology, and new image capturing tools have flooded the market, it’s now less about correcting problems or location errors, and more about creating moods or emotional narratives which lives or dies on the skill and individual artistry of the colorist.

Because of technological optimization today, all professionals color graders have access to similar high-end gear, the same way top cinematographers have access to the same cameras systems, lenses and lights, what makes the difference, at the end of the day, is the individual creative judgment and eye to interpret the vision of the filmmaker and deliver the visual quality or look the movie maker does not even know he or she wants until they see it.

Beyond world class color grading, COLOR SPACE FINISHING, as the name implies, also offers full service integrated finishing services including conforming and work-flow consulting.

FINE ART MOTION PICTURE COLOR GRADING ON DaVINCI RESOLVE

The process and role of what was known “in the day” as a color timer or color timing has evolved dramatically over the last couple of decades since I started in the business. The sophistication of the tools and the medium has brought about not only an evolution, but a true REVOLUTION in expectations from filmmakers.

I don’t see what I do as an adjustment. I see my role has being the final instrument, the final creative tool for a director’s and DPs vision to realize a LOOK they have in their minds eye, an EMOTINAL or EVOCATIVE FEELING that could otherwise never be achieved in years past.

It’s about visual story telling enhancement and creating stylistic looks to serve that creative mission… from stylizing a scene to communicate a flashback, dream sequence or hallucination to giving the entire film a unique emotional feel and style… it’s about isolating… and focusing (literally and metaphorically)
